This method is a standardized system for the description, on a numerical basis, of the condition of an engine or engine component in terms of: the accumulation of deposits, the degradation of the surface due to mechanical action or chemical attack, and the functional state of the component, e.g. ring sticking.

Wear is not assessed by the method, as this phenomenon is generally subject to direct measurement.
